It is squirrels? They are notorious for gnawing bark. If you have them around, you may want to put out feed for them, maybe corn since it is cheaper than nuts. You can put a ring of stick-em or tanglefoot around the tree , high enough so the squirrels can’t jump onto the trunk above it from the ground, and they won’t want to cross it. Mix some powdered copper (Kocide) with linseed oil and paint on the damaged areas.
